Porsche – Gigafactory for battery cells in Brandenburg under discussion.

As the local newspaper Lausitzer Rundschau reports, work is being done behind the scenes on a suitable settlement on the grounds of the Schwarzheide/Schipkau airfield. Insiders from local and state politics have brought into play that a “very well-known name from the car industry” wants to come.

Further research then pointed to Porsche, which has its own subsidiary, Cellforce, for the development and production of high-performance battery cells for electric cars. This is already building a factory near the southern German location of Reutlingen, but a second, much larger plant is already being planned.

Porsche CFO Lutz Meschke explained here some time ago that when looking for a location, they were looking around in Europe, the USA and even Canada. The area mentioned in Lusatia would, however, be considered for a selection for a number of reasons.

Best Neighborhood

A complete battery industry is growing in the region. The BASF plant, where modern battery components are prefabricated, is in the immediate vicinity. In addition, there is also the first lithium refinement in Europe, which is also being developed in the region, which can supply the raw materials for cell production with several factories for battery recycling. And various international heavyweights in the battery industry – from the Japanese Altech to the Chinese CATL – are also present with branches.

In the state capital Potsdam, no one wants to comment on the subject so far. Porsche is also silent. The group merely stated that a decision was to be made by the end of the year as to where the new plant would be built, which would produce cell capacities of up to 20 gigawatt hours per year.
