Innovations in battery manufacturing: Fraunhofer FFB and PEM Motion intensify cooperation.

The Fraunhofer Research Institution for Battery Cell Production FFB (Fraunhofer FFB) and the engineering service provider PEM Motion GmbH have signed a Letter of Intent confirming their plans to advance technological developments in battery cell production through joint research and development activities.

Münster/Aachen. Against the backdrop of the energy revolution and the transition to electromobility, the battery industry is predicted to experience enormous market growth on both the customer and supplier sides. Current production capacities are expected to increase tenfold by 2030. However, the planning and realization of the required production facilities poses numerous technical challenges. Fraunhofer FFB and PEM Motion GmbH have therefore signed a Letter of intent to address these challenges through close cooperation and the exchange of expertise.

Dr. Florian Degen, Division Director “Strategy and Corporate Development” at Fraunhofer FFB:

Electromobility has long since established itself on the mass market. The industrialization of battery cell production is essential to meet demand in a cost-effective and sustainable manner and to achieve technological dominance in Europe.

“Through cooperations such as with PEM Motion, we can make innovative technologies and production know-how available to an even broader user market and thus put Europe in the fast lane.”

Multi-level cooperation to promote technology transfer

PEM Motion will contribute consulting and engineering services in the field of electromobility – from product design to business development.

Dr. Christoph Deutskens, PEM Motion Managing Director, said:

By cooperating with Fraunhofer FFB, we not only have a professional partner to offer our customers unique services in many areas of battery cell production, but also an innovation partner to further develop the state of the art in this field.

The recently opened “FFB PreFab” provides a test area with state-of-the-art European machine technology for the joint activities, which makes a significant contribution to driving innovation and commercialization processes and reducing risks in the transfer of novel cell concepts and production technologies to large-scale production. The partners also plan to collaborate in the future on the possibilities of the digital value chain as a key enabler for sustainable battery cell production. The broad portfolio will be complemented by joint activities in the area of effective and efficient quality management.

The aim of the agreement is to successively promote technology transfer between science and industry through joint projects and thus sustainably strengthen the innovative power and competitiveness of the battery industry, particularly in Germany and Europe.
