BMW Group receives building rights for a new battery assembly site in Lower Bavaria.

The BMW Group today received the building permit for the new assembly site in the communities of Irlbach and Straßkirchen, Lower Bavaria. The decision for the development plan was made on April 10, 2024 in the planning association of the two communities of Irlbach and Straßkirchen. With the announcement in the official gazette of the Straubing-Bogen district, the BMW Group has the legal basis for the construction of the new location. At the end of March 2024, the district office approved the early start of soil removal, construction site setup and the setting up of construction and office containers.

Markus Fallböhmer, Head of Battery Production at the BMW Group:

We are pleased to have reached this important milestone in our project.

“With the building law we have received the legal basis to continue to push ahead with the realization of our new location in Lower Bavaria as planned.”

The assembly site in Lower Bavaria will supply the BMW Group’s Bavarian automobile plants in Munich, Dingolfing and Regensburg with next-generation high-voltage batteries, thereby making a significant contribution to the expansion of e-mobility. At the same time, jobs will be secured in the BMW Group’s Bavarian automobile plants and new jobs will be created in the pioneering area of e-mobility. Once the first construction phase is completed, around 1,600 people will be employed at this production site.

Careful handling of topsoil

After approval from the Straubing-Bogen district office, the company began removing the topsoil on the first construction phase of around 60 hectares at the beginning of April 2024. The BMW Group is committed to the sensitive reuse of topsoil and plans to distribute the topsoil to agricultural businesses in the region – in close cooperation with local, agricultural-related associations, the government of Lower Bavaria and the Deggendorf Water Management Office.

Clear approval from citizens for the construction of the site

It was only in September 2023 that a referendum in Straßkirchen cleared the way for the BMW Group to settle in Straßkirchen and Irlbach. The referendum had an exceptionally high voter turnout of almost 77 percent. Over 75 percent of the votes cast – a clear majority – were in favor of locating the assembly plant for high-voltage batteries.
