There are still large areas of arable land – but soon batteries will be installed there. The BMW Group has acquired a plot of land not far from its Dingolfing plant.

BMW has found a site for its battery assembly for the vehicles of the electric car model series “New Class”. The Munich-based carmaker secured an area of 105 hectares in the municipalities of Straßkirchen and Irlbach in Lower Bavaria, a spokesman said. A corresponding purchase agreement was therefore signed. The property is located about 40 kilometers north of the BMW car plant in Dingolfing.

The start of construction is planned for the beginning of next year. The battery assembly plant would create around a thousand jobs, the spokesman said. In a first step, about half of the area is likely to be built on, the remaining space is available for expansion. First, however, the population is to be informed about the plans on 3 March.

BMW wants to assemble the batteries for the vehicles, which will be built in Dingolfing, Regensburg and Munich. This is likely to involve investments in the range of 700 to 800 million euros – BMW has recently announced expenditures of this magnitude for its battery assembly plants in Debrecen, Hungary, San Luis Potosí in Mexico and near Spartanburg in the US state of South Carolina.

Battery cell production is not planned in Lower Bavaria, the company announced. The previous strategy of not setting up our own series production for battery cells has proven its worth and also offers the best result for the coming battery cell generation.

BMW relies on round cells for the vehicles of the “New Class”, which will come onto the market from the middle of the decade, and thus follows Tesla’s model. The Munich-based group is working together with the Chinese battery cell specialist CATL, among others.
