World-leading battery researcher joins Uppsala University
Professor Patrik Johansson is the new director of the flagship project Battery 2030+. He has led many large international research projects and was most recently director of the EU research programme the Graphene Flagship.
For the past 25 years, Patrik Johansson has been based at Chalmers University of Technology. He holds a Distinguished Professor grant from the Swedish Research Council and is the former director of the Graphene Flagship, one of the EU’s largest research programmes. Johansson is also co-director of ALISTORE ERI, one of Europe’s oldest R&D networks between industry and academia in the battery field.
Will lead Battery 2030+
At Uppsala University, Patrik Johansson will be professor of chemistry specialising in batteries. He will also lead the European battery research collaboration Battery 2030+. He replaces Kristina Edström in the role of professor and director of the collaboration.
Johansson, says:
Battery 2030+ is to me a guarantee for excellence-driven application-inspired research being conducted in a long-lasting, harmonised and efficient manner all across Europe.
“I cannot think of something more inspiring to contribute to, and it is a huge honour to take the baton after Kristina,”
In his own research, Johansson focuses on finding new battery technologies. He earned his PhD in inorganic chemistry from Uppsala University in 1998.
Johansson, says :
It is with mixed feelings that I am changing universities after 25 years and moving back to Uppsala, but I believe that change is a good thing and it will give me new energy.
“I have been involved in a great deal of cooperation with Uppsala University over the years and know that there is strong support for this research field at the University. I am very much looking forward to meeting everyone in the Uppsala battery environment,”
Good for battery research in Europe
Kristina Edström, Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at Uppsala University and former Director of Battery 2030+, is enthusiastic about the recruitment.
Edström, says :
We are truly happy that Patrik Johansson can take over the responsibilities as Director of Battery 2030+.
“He is ideal for this task, considering his excellent research in the battery field and his previous management of the Graphene Flagship. This will be great for the development of battery research in Europe,”
Patrik Johansson took up his duties on 1 March 2025.
