Varta to found its own subsidiary for e-mobility, batteries for EV’s.
[Welt] Varta returns to the car business. The battery manufacturer founds a new subsidiary for e-mobility. Some time ago, the Varta boss announced an offensive for e-car batteries. The name of the subsidiary is reminiscent of old times.Rand 20 years after the sale of the battery business for vehicles with internal combustion engines, Varta is pushing ahead with a return to the automotive business – this time for electric vehicles. According to WELT AM SONNTAG information, the new stock corporation Pertrix V SE was recently founded as a Varta subsidiary.
According to the commercial register, the business purpose is above all the acquisition and management of “company participations in the field of electromobility”.
A spokesman explained on request that it was still a “shelf company without operational business”. Varta would not inform about further developments until 31 March in connection with the presentation of the business figures.
Last year, Varta CEO Herbert Schein gave the first details for the future production of particularly fast-charging lithium-ion batteries for electric cars.
In addition to setting up a pilot plant, he announced a growth offensive for e-car batteries for the years 2022/23. However, the Varta boss has not yet provided any information about a future European stock corporation (SE) for investments in the e-mobility sector.
Companies often set up shelf companies for future plans. In most cases, however, it remains with aliases, and the business purpose is not yet specified.
The new Varta subsidiary at the company’s headquarters in Ellwangen, Swabia, shows the spirit of optimism of German companies to set up their own battery production for electric vehicles and to network in the process. This is intended to reduce dependence on supplies from Asia.
For example, Through its joint venture Cellforce Group, Porsche is also entering the production of high-performance batteries with a Porsche share of almost 73 percent and is setting up a production facility near Reutlingen.
It should be ready for use in 2024. Varta is also considered a potential Porsche supplier.
A Porsche spokesman said:
There are various exploratory talks.
It is noteworthy that Varta chooses the name Pertrix for the new daughter. It is one of the Group’s predecessor brands and companies with over 130 years of history. Pertrix has developed the first storable dry battery.
According to previous announcements, the listed Varta Group expects sales of around 900 million euros for 2021. The focus is on microbatteries. The first revenue and earnings contributions from e-mobility are expected in 2024.
