UP Catalyst Announces Former Vice President of Skeleton Technologies Its New Chief Technology Officer.

Pohlmann joins UP Catalyst with more than a decade of expertise in leading the development of energy storage solutions and R&D teams in the global technology sector.

Sebastian Pohlmann, the former Vice President of Business Development at Skeleton Technologies, joined UP Catalyst, the rapidly growing green technology startup, which turns the harmful greenhouse gas CO into valuable carbon nanomaterials and graphite for electric car batteries. Pohlmann will lead the technology team at UP Catalyst and execute the company’s technical vision and strategy.

Pohlmann joins UP Catalyst after 8 years at Skeleton Technologies, where he focused on bringing high power energy storage into automotive applications and into electrification projects. He coordinated joint innovation projects at European, Federal and local levels. Prior to that, he managed a postdoctoral research project at the University of Münster, focusing on novel anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Sebastian Pohlmann, why he joined UP Catalyst:

When I joined Skeleton, they were a small deep tech startup. In 8 years I managed to contribute to the journey and development of the company from 40 people to 350.

“I aim to have a positive impact on a similar journey at UP Catalyst. My main role revolves around enabling the UP Catalyst team to turn the technology into innovation and value so that the product can be produced and sold en masse to the energy storage market, which is one of the fastest growing markets globally. The phase of scaling from 25 people and building both culture and processes is extremely exciting,”

The co-founder and CEO of UP Catalyst, Dr Gary Urb emphasized that Sebastian Pohlmann is a high level expert with a successful track record of developing innovative technology solutions.

Dr Gary Urb, The co-founder and CEO of UP Catalyst, said:

We are thrilled to welcome Sebastian Pohlmann to our team at UP Catalyst.

“With his extensive background in energy storage companies where raw materials are in high demand, he brings a wealth of high-level knowledge and a proven track record of developing trusted products and services. As the pioneer of the first scalable technology in the world to produce sustainable carbon nanomaterials and graphite from CO₂ emissions, UP Catalyst is poised for significant growth in green solutions for electric car batteries. Sebastian’s expertise will play a crucial role in taking our innovative technology to the next level of development,” said Urb.

With the global demand for graphite expected to outstrip supply, creating an estimated 700,000-ton annual deficit by 2030, UP Catalyst is positioned to become a transformative force in the European battery landscape. By replacing fossil-based graphite with UP Catalyst green graphite, the battery anodes will become  CO₂-negative. This shift could contribute to avoiding 118.7 megatons of CO₂ emissions annually by the year 2030, marking a substantial environmental impact.

With China announcing export restrictions on graphite last year, the imperative to develop new technologies for providing graphite raw materials in Europe becomes particularly crucial given that Europe currently depends on graphite imports for 99% of its supply. This year, the company will construct an industrial pilot reactor capable of processing 100 tons of CO₂ annually and producing 27 tons of carbon materials. The plan is to scale up this capacity 10 times by 2025, positioning UP Catalyst as the largest provider of green graphite globally.
