Uniper – Approval granted for 50 MW battery storage facility at Wilhelmshaven site

Uniper has received full approval for the construction and operation of a 50-megawatt battery storage facility at the former Wilhelmshaven power plant site. With this step, the company is supporting the transformation of the site and contributing to the energy transition in the region.

The new battery storage system will enhance flexibility and reliability in the power supply. Energy storage plays a vital role in integrating renewable energy sources by balancing fluctuations and strengthening grid stability.

Harald Poppinga, reports project manager,

The Wilhelmshaven power plant was shut down in December 2021.

Since then, Uniper has actively pursued the development of new projects at the site. Construction of a photovoltaic plant on the former ash landfill site recently began. The solar power plant with a planned annual output of 17,500 megawatt hours is being built on the site between the Old Voslapper Dike and the southern Voslapper Groden. Commissioning is scheduled for July 2026.

Dr. Nadine Menning, Head of Energy Assets Northwest at Uniper

The approval marks an important step for the future of the Wilhelmshaven site.

With the battery storage system, we are creating a link between security of supply and the energy transition.
