To actively respond to the objectives of limiting the increase in temperature established in the Paris Agreement, the goals of sustainable climate action of the United Nations and the strategy of “dual control” of carbon emissions and their intensity established by the Government of ChinaOn July 21, Tianqi Lithium has officially launched its ” White Paper on Sustainable Lithium Industry in a Net-Zero Emissions Future” (hereinafter ” White Paper “).
Tianqi Lithium is committed to continuously reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions within the scale of its core operations, achieving a reduction of more than 42% compared to base year 2022 emission levels by 2030. In addition , will strive to achieve a 50% decline in Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions compared to the base year by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
The White Paper consists of three main parts: first, it urges all members of the lithium value chain to join the “Changing the World with Net Zero Lithium” initiative and invites them to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050; second, it discusses the opportunities and challenges facing the lithium industry to achieve the net zero emissions goal, proposing key strategies to achieve it and urging institutions and companies to join the zero carbon action; Third, it publishes the company’s Climate Related Financial Disclosure (TCFD) report, presenting commitments and strategies for carbon reduction, in line with the spirit of the “Changing the World with Net Zero Lithium” initiative.
Tianqi Lithium will implement a green energy procurement and absorption strategy before 2030, continuously improving energy efficiency and renewable energy ratio, and gradually promoting the installation of distributed solar power systems in its plants. In addition, they will prioritize the acquisition of renewable energy and green chemicals.
To date, Tianqi Lithium’s Shehong factory in Sichuan has already managed to use 100% hydropower, while the Zhangjiagang plant in Jiangsuthe installation of distributed solar energy systems on the roofs has begun.
By 2050, Tianqi Lithium will base its core strategy on R&D and asset renewal, exploring and developing green energy thermal storage steam systems, carbon neutral gas systems, and carbon dioxide recycling systems. high efficiency. Specific actions will include improving electrification, increasing the share of sustainable fuels, and using carbon capture and storage technologies.
As one of the major players in the lithium industry, Tianqi Lithium has taken responsibility for climate change. Since 2018, it has been building its own carbon database and in 2020, it started systematic carbon management.
Currently, coordinated mechanisms for carbon management have been established both nationally and internationally, and organizational level carbon inventory assessments and product carbon footprints using life cycle assessment (LCA) have been completed.
