The start-up Circu Li-ion and Amazon want to jointly extend the lifespan of batteries in logistics processes

  • Circu Li-ion enables the reuse of old batteries and reconditions them in an automated process
  • The start-up based in Germany and Luxembourg reduces battery waste
  • Amazon supports Circu Li-ion with its Sustainability Accelerator program
  • The pilot project can lead to a long-term partnership with Amazon

Tuesday, September 24, 2024, Munich – The start-up Circu Li-ion and Amazon are working to extend the lifespan of batteries in logistics processes. In an automated process, the batteries are disassembled and the individual cells are checked to see whether they can be reused or recycled. By more effectively reusing batteries from electric vehicles, Amazon wants to reduce the demand for new batteries and reduce the associated carbon footprint. Circu Li-ion is supported by the Amazon Sustainability Accelerator program, which supports more sustainable start-ups financially and with know-how.

Antoine Welter, CEO and co-founder of Circu Li-ion, says:

Our participation in the Amazon Sustainability Accelerator is driven by our goal to revolutionize the battery industry and recycle three billion batteries by 2040,

“We are proud to be part of a program that supports more sustainable innovations and are happy to work with Amazon to evolve so that we can continue to have a positive impact on the climate.”

The pilot phase, which will begin after September 2024, will enable Circu Li-ion to expand its technology in Germany. During the six months of the pilot, Circu Li-ion and Amazon will jointly process batteries from electric vehicles from Amazon’s delivery network using Circu Li-ion’s technology. This allows for more granular recycling, which enables a higher degree of waste avoidance and reuse. The collaboration will not only help Amazon reduce the need for new batteries. Circu Li-ion can also become a model for other companies that want to electrify their logistics, for example.

The company currently has two locations in Karlsruhe (Germany) and Foetz (Luxembourg).

During the Sustainability Accelerator program, Circu Li-ion gained insights into how global companies implement sustainability initiatives. The program also gives participants access to networks and a tailored curriculum.

Justine Mahler, Sustainability Director at Amazon, says:

This pioneering program demonstrates Amazon’s commitment to supporting innovation and driving positive change,

“By testing unique and innovative technologies in real-world conditions, we not only reduce our environmental impact, but also create a blueprint for more sustainable practices across the industry.”

Since its launch in 2022, the Amazon Sustainability Accelerator has supported more than 40 startups in the UK and Europe, providing more than €1 million in grants and loans, helping these companies increase their revenue by an average of 700% and raising more than €18.7 million to date.
