Tesla gigafactory in Berlin water permits approved – maybe as early as november.
[Business Insider] It was a long tremor – now there is clarity. The Tesla factory in Grünheide will receive a final permit. Business Insider learned this from government circles. However, the approval will be subject to strict conditions. The responsible Brandenburg State Office for the Environment (LfU) will demand many readjustments from the US car manufacturer, especially with the topic of water and possible incidents. In the case of the latter, it should be above all the toxic pollutants that cause concern to the supervisory authority. In late spring, an independent report had already certified Tesla that it was not sufficiently prepared for possible incidents, such as burning laughter in the factory or the escape of toxic gases.
Currently, the more than 800 objections to the factory are still being processed. Citizens’ initiatives, environmental associations and public associations such as the Strausberg-Erkner Water Association have filed a formal objection to the US carmaker’s construction plans.
This processing will continue into October, which is why the issuance of the permit is not likely until November. The fact that the factory will be approved by the State Environment Agency was discussed in a small circle several days ago, according to information from Business Insider.
A spokeswoman for the responsible Brandenburg Ministry of the Environment replied to a questionnaire from Business Insider:
The evaluated objections, the statements of the authorities and the results of the online consultation will be incorporated into a decision to be issued on Tesla’s application for the construction of the vehicle/battery factory.
“The state of play of the procedure may be consulted by the public in the documents of the online consultation which are available to the public and available on the Internet.’; The spokeswoman continues: “A decision will be made after the discussion/online consultation. Therefore, no statements can be made about the result of the decision, the date and the contents at this time.”
Brandenburg’s Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke has also commented on the case. Shortly after Business Insider confronted the responsible environment ministry with the research, Woidke gave an interview to the German Press Agency in which he said that a permit for the factory “is conceivable this year”. However, it is important that the approval is legally sound, Woidke added.
According to reports, Tesla is preparing for a timely start of production. For example, the company’s headquarters will soon be withdrawing specialized task force teams that will be deployed worldwide to build Tesla factories.
