Swiss KMU Partners celebrate milestone in the construction of one of the largest battery storage facilities in Germany.
Swiss KMU Partners AG (SKP) and the MW Storage Fund they manage are celebrating an important milestone in the construction of the first large-scale project in Arzberg: the topping-out ceremony for the large-scale battery storage facility with an output of 100 MW and a capacity of 200 MWh.
Topping-out ceremony and progress
On June 26, 2024, the topping-out ceremony took place at the construction site in Arzberg / Wunsiedel together with numerous guests from politics, industry and investors. The first of two transformers for the battery storage system was successfully delivered to the construction site and installed on schedule, marking significant progress in the construction process for the plant. With an output of 100 MW and a total capacity of 200 MWh, the project is currently one of the largest grid-serving storage facilities under construction in Germany and Europe. Despite some unexpected obstacles during the construction phase, such as the discovery of large boulders underground, the project team led by Wilfried Karl and Marco Rüegg from MW Storage showed remarkable flexibility and ingenuity to find quick solutions and keep the construction progress of this major project on schedule. According to planning, the BESS is still scheduled to go into operation in spring 2025.
Partnerships and team performance
Wilfried Karl, site manager and managing director at MW Storage, in his topping-out speech, as they have:
Many thanks and congratulations go to the entire MW Storage project team and all the partners and investors involved. Fluence, Siemens Energy and BKW Engineering deserve special mention here.
“all contributed significantly to the success to date with their great commitment and expertise”.
