SVOLT is reaching up to 400 Wh/kg in solid-state batteries.

SVOLT, the Chinese power battery supplier carved out of Great Wall Motor (“GWM”), has developed the prototype of China’s first 20Ah sulfide-based solid-state cells, the company announced via its WeChat account.

The Changzhou-headquartered battery maker said the new series of cells can realize an energy density of 350-400Wh/kg, and has sailed through a slew of tests like nail penetration and high temperature (200°C). The mass-produced cells can provide an electric vehicle (“EV”) with a range of over 1,000km.

The new cell product was developed by SVOLT’s solid-state battery laboratory. According to the company, the laboratory has made layouts in manufacturing technologies for sulfide electrolytes and relevant separators, and the production of sulfide-based solid-state batteries.

It has already obtained in-house R&D capabilities in the synthesis of kilogram-level solid-state battery electrolyte materials, the assembly of solid-state pouch cells, the development of new facilities, etc.

In April 2021, SVOLT’s Wuxi Lithium Battery Innovation Center joined hands with Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology & Engineering, CAS to inaugurate the aforesaid laboratory dedicated to R&D of solid-state battery technologies.

In the first half of 2022, SVOLT recorded a power battery installed capacity of 2.58GWh, ranking sixth among power battery makers in China, according to data by the China Automotive Power Battery Industry Innovation Alliance (CAPBIIA).
