Battery manufacturer SVOLT Energy Technology announced the development of its cobalt-free battery cells chemistry for the first time at the International Motor Show (IAA) in September 2019. Now the first cell variants can be ordered.
Worldwide, SVOLT initially offers two sizes of the novel nickel-manganese battery cells.
These can do without the heavy metal cobalt, which is otherwise used for the thermal stabilization of high-nickel battery cells (NCM). Series production of the new products is scheduled to start in June 2021 at the Plant in Jintan, China. It is planned for the end of 2023 that the new batteries can also be produced at the planned plant in Saarland.
A cobalt-free NMX battery cell with an energy density of 245 Wh/kg can now be ordered in a MEB format (33.4 x 220 x 102.5 mm). This cell variant is expected to be available from the second quarter of 2021. Also available is a cobalt-free version with an energy density of 240 Wh/kg, which is expected to be available from the fourth quarter of 2021.

Thanks to the complete renunciation of the heavy metal cobalt and a reduced nickel content, SVOLT’s cobalt-free NMX cells are not only more sustainable, but also around 5 percent cheaper than classic high-nickel battery cells, according to the company.
At the same time, SVOLT products achieve an energy density that is just under 5 percent lower than that of comparable NCM battery cells. Using the new technology, SVOLT has also succeeded in significantly improving cycle aging as well as the calendrical aging of NMX cells compared to conventional NCM battery cells. More than 2,500 charging cycles can be achieved.
The cobalt-free battery cells will be used in a Great Wall Motors electric vehicle, which will be available on the Chinese market from July 2021. However, interest in the new battery technology is also high beyond China’s borders, according to Maxim Hantsch-Kramskoj, Vice President Sales & Marketing for SVOLT Europe.
