Svolt Starts with Cathode Material Production for Cobalt-Free Nmx Battery Cells. SVOLT Energy Technology Co., Ltd. (SVOLT), a global high-tech company headquartered in China, today announced that it has started mass production of the cobalt-free cathode material for its NMX battery cells in Jintan, east China.

In January 2021, the pilot production with 10 tons of cobalt-free cathode material in the battery cell factory was successfully completed. The current expansion stage in the cell factory in Jintan now produces 5,000 tons of the central material for cobalt-free battery production every year.

Cobalt-free nickel-manganese battery cells

The nickel-manganese battery cells (NMX) from SVOLT completely dispense with the heavy metal cobalt, which is otherwise used to stabilize high-nickel battery cells. This means that SVOLT is so far the only company on the market that has succeeded in bringing a high nickel cell chemistry without cobalt to industrial series maturity suitable for mass production.

For the cobalt-free NMX battery cells, SVOLT has developed a new cathode material that consists of 75 percent nickel and 25 percent manganese and does not contain any cobalt. The cathode is stabilized using specially developed doping and coating processes. In this way, NMX cells – even without cobalt – achieve higher thermal stability and overall safety than NCM811 cells.

The first cobalt-free battery cells, which are more sustainable and cheaper than the comparable NCM811 battery cells, will roll off the assembly line from June 2021. The first two NMX cell variants from SVOLT have been available to order worldwide since mid-December 2020.

Solemn event in Jintan

SVOLT President and General Manager Hongxin Yang welcomed the next step on the way to sustainable battery production for e-vehicles at a festive event at the Jintan plant.

An English-language recording of the event is available on the svolt-eu.com website or on the YouTube channel.

Hongxin Yang, SVOLT President and General Manager:

As early as 2018, we realized that the limited cobal resources can hinder the sustainable development of the battery industry.

“That is why SVOLT has set itself the goal of continuously leading the battery industry through research and development work in order to open up new technologies and thus to become the technology leader of a new era. “
