Start-up from Halle produces silicon anodes in series

“NorcSi” from Halle, Germany, begins series production of silicon anodes. The company aims to be the first in the world to manufacture pure silicon anodes using an efficient roll-to-roll process.

The Halle-based company Norcsi has raised €10.7 million and is launching the industrial production of pure silicon anodes . This will transform the research project into a series product. Norcsi aims to be the first company in the world to produce pure silicon anodes automatically using a roll-to-roll process. This means the company creates a thin film of pure silicon on standard carrier foils, enabling it to manufacture anodes on an industrial scale in a closed-loop production process. To this end, Norcsi has built a 400-millimeter-wide roll-to-roll system for the industrial production of its anodes at its Halle an der Saale site.

The first facility was built in 2022 in collaboration with the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. Here, the company produced anode material using a roll-to-roll process on rolls with a width of 180 millimeters.

This has also enabled us to increase our testing and adaptation speed,

And: “Our test cells already achieve respectable values in terms of cycle stability and exceptional values in terms of charging speed and capacity. Nevertheless, numerous parameters remain open for further optimization.” The new facility is scheduled to supply partners from the battery and automotive industries in spring 2026.

Patented flash lamp technology

Batteries with silicon anodes are expected to enable electric cars to achieve ranges of over 1,000 kilometers. Charging time is reduced to six minutes, Norcsi writes in its press release. This is made possible by the special property of silicon: It can absorb ten times more lithium ions than conventional graphite.

Norcsi coats copper foil with silicon using high-power flash lamps. This creates a unique nanostructure that stably bonds copper and silicon. This solves the problem of volume changes during charging and discharging—the weak point of previous silicon anodes.
