Schneider Electric – Made in Europe: Newly founded Upcell – European Battery Manufacturing Alliance promotes European battery manufacturing.
The non-profit organization founded in October brings research and industry together. Goal: make European energy storage production more independent
Building a value chain for the development of the European battery industry together and making Europe more economically autonomous – that is the goal of the new Upcell – European Battery Manufacturing Alliance.
The non-profit organization was founded in Paris on October 6, 2022. The 38 founding members from industry and science came together under the direction of Claude Laperiere, President of the Upcell Alliance.
No mobility revolution without a battery
Efficient, lightweight electricity storage systems are essential for the mobility revolution. The members and partners of the new Upcell Alliance have therefore set themselves the task of building a European value chain for energy storage and thus accelerating the transition to electromobility.
The fact that this will continue to promote European battery production is ultimately also related to the planned ban on the sale of new vehicles with combustion engines in the EU. At the same time, a certain independence from global supply chains and greater crisis resilience should be created.
To this end, the non-profit organization will be involved in projects throughout Europe that deal with the production of energy storage devices. In addition, the Upcell Alliance plans to use high-profile events, advertising campaigns and conferences to draw attention to the advantages of an economically autonomous Europe and to promote international exchange.
Members from research and industry
Apart from its commitment to European battery manufacturing, the Upcell Alliance is also intended as an exchange platform for industry representatives. Research and industry come together here.
A total of seven different colleges and universities as well as the Battech research initiative are part of the new organization. Industry companies are also represented that cover the entire process of battery production – including the three crucial steps of electrode production, assembly of the battery cells and assembly of the battery packs.
