Saft delivers backup batteries for Grand Paris Express.
Saft, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies, has started delivery of backup battery systems to Alstom’s Metropolis metro trains destined for lines 15, 16, and 17 of the Grand Paris Express project, the largest transport project in Europe.
Saft has already supplied the first 10 batteries systems for five trains out of a total of up to 183 trains required for three new lines (15, 16 and 17) by 2030.
The batteries will power on-board signaling and control, security lighting, door control, communication systems, as well as ventilation, air-conditioning, lighting, and USB charging sockets.
Each battery system will provide 130 Amp-hours (Ah) capacity and is based on the latest version of its MRX nickel batteries, together with accessories and battery box.
The batteries are designed to provide an extended lifetime of up to 20 years, as well as high reliability to provide a low total cost of ownership (TCO). In addition, being compact in size, they enable Alstom to free up space in the passenger compartment.
Milan Sima, Saft General Manager for Rail, said:
Saft batteries have been on board regional trains in Paris for more than 80 years.
“By 1985, all metro and regional express trains were already equipped with Saft batteries. Saft is proud to be on board Alstom trains with MRX batteries that will offer safety and reliability to passengers of lines 15, 16, and 17 for decades to come.”
