Purem by Eberspaecher at aabc Europe 2026: High-strength steel for battery housings

Esslingen / Mainz (Germany), 8 April 2026 – At the advanced automotive battery conference (aabc) Europe in Mainz from May 18 to 21, 2026, Purem by Eberspaecher will be presenting its newly developed battery housing made of high-strength steel. A concept study is exploring its potential for use in the European market in terms of cost, sustainability, and safety.

Battery housings in electric vehicles protect both cell modules and passengers. In current vehicle generations, manufacturers often rely on aluminum for production – Purem by Eberspaecher is now offering a more economical and sustainable alternative with a variant made of high-strength steel. The exhaust gas and acoustics specialist will be showcasing the housing design at Booth 606 at aabc Europe 2026.

Economical, sustainable, customized
Compared to aluminum, steel offers greater strength and allows for lighter battery housings thanks to the use of thinner walls. Every gram counts, especially for high-performance batteries with a long operating range — and weight is therefore an important competitive factor. In addition, the manufacturing process is not only more cost-effective but also has a smaller CO2 footprint: The material can be produced using less carbon dioxide and is easier to recycle.

Transfer of successful launch from Asia to Europe
With a clear strategy, Purem by Eberspaecher initially focused on launching the product in the Asian market. The exhaust and acoustics specialist brought its extensive knowledge of materials engineering and the corresponding welding processes to bear in the development. Customer recommendations from Chinese manufacturers and the start of series production with a volume of over 100,000 housings annually from the second half of 2026 testify to the viability of the steel design. The Esslingen-based company is now rolling out this success across Europe. Moreover, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) is cutting development times: With an AI tool, Purem by Eberspaecher can compute individual adjustments and manufacturer specifications more quickly and translate them into a manufacturing concept.

Consortium for further development of the product
A concept study by a new consortium is focusing on the development and virtual design of a lightweight stainless-steel housing. In addition to Purem by Eberspaecher as co-founder, the consortium partners include Sphere Energy, Bertrandt, the Tillmann Group, Reinert, Baosteel Lasertechnik, and 3M. The aim is to eliminate the need for additional corrosion protection by using stainless steel and to make the housing design both crash-proof and cost-effective by means of specially developed profiles and reinforcements.
