New start for battery recycling plant in Thuringia.

Investors are planning a recycling plant for batteries in Gera. A joint venture between the Korean companies SungEel and Samsung C&T wants to invest 45 million euros and create about 100 jobs, the companies announced.

By the end of the decade, a total of up to 74 million euros could flow into the project in the Gera-Cretzschwitz industrial park if the market develops accordingly. At the beginning of the year, a recycling plant for lithium-ion batteries in Rudolstadt-Schwarza failed.

The plan is to reprocess 22,000 tons of batteries annually in the Gera industrial park. This corresponds to the production of batteries for about 60,000 electric cars a year, said a company spokesman. Construction is scheduled to start in March 2024.

Wolfgang Tiefensee, Economics Minister said:

A sustainable energy supply, as Germany is striving for, necessarily includes the topic of battery recycling.

Electromobility in particular is hardly conceivable without the recovery of rare metals from used vehicle batteries. Thuringia, as an important location for battery production, therefore supports the planned settlement.

The Gera-Cretzschwitz industrial site was developed by the state development company. The plant is to be built on an area of about 30,000 square meters.

According to the companies’ plans, the first of two production lines is scheduled to go into operation at the beginning of 2025, with the second at the beginning of 2027. Old batteries would be disassembled, crushed and dried.

Subsequently, the substances would be separated in a mechanical process, so that in the end the raw materials remained. They would be used for new batteries. For production wastewater, a separate disposal is planned, the companies explained.
