New Nordic power gathering for sustainable battery recycling

Sweden and Norway in joint effort on future electric vehicle batteries – new agreement between automotive industry organizations to meet new EU requirements.

To meet the upcoming requirements of the EU’s new battery regulation, Mobility Sweden and the Norwegian Bilimportørenes Landsforening are entering into a strategic collaboration. Through the subsidiaries Swedish FoRetur and Norwegian Autoretur Battery Recycling, they will build an efficient, coordinated return system for electric vehicle batteries, adapted to future requirements.

The collaboration means that FoRetur and Autoretur Battery Recycling will start parallel tender processes for treatment operators between the countries already in August.

Focus on efficiency, competition and circular economy
Together, FoRetur and Autoretur Battery Recycling will have several strategic goals:

• Share experiences and working methods
• Lay the foundation for a circular and sustainable battery economy
• Benefit from economies of scale and achieve the greatest possible environmental benefit and efficient use of resources
• Collaborate with authorities for the most uniform requirements and reporting systems possible

  • This collaboration has been established to address one of the most important sustainability challenges for the automotive industry. The automotive industry of the future will largely be electric, and it is crucial that we succeed in establishing an efficient and circular battery economy, says Anna Henstedt, responsible for recycling issues at Mobility Sweden and CEO of FoRetur AB.
  • Our ambition is to ensure both environmental benefits for society and competitiveness for the automotive industry. By working together, we can build a system that is robust and sustainable in the long term, says Erik Andresen, CEO of the Norwegian Association of Vehicle Importers.
