New large-scale storage system from electric vehicle batteries – Fenecon and The Mobility House Energy industrialize the construction and marketing of large-scale storage systems from EV batteries

  • A 48 MWh container storage facility made of new vehicle batteries is being built in Grevesmühlen, combining economic efficiency with a resource-saving circular economy.
  • Fenecon develops and produces modular storage containers that efficiently and standardize the integration of obsolete vehicle batteries from different manufacturers into large-scale stationary storage systems.
  • The Mobility House Energy markets its products based on its many years of expertise and intelligent marketing algorithms, which enable minimal battery aging and maximum economic efficiency.

In Grevesmühlen (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania), the two energy specialists Fenecon and The Mobility House Energy are building a high-performance large-scale storage facility with a capacity of 48 MWh, similar to a sister project with 8 MWh in North Rhine-Westphalia. Preparations at the site are almost complete.

Following the completion of the local substation by E.DIS Netz GmbH, the power storage facility will go into operation in the second half of 2025. Its unique feature: It will use exclusively new, but now obsolete, traction batteries from electric vehicles.

Fenecon and The Mobility House Energy have already successfully implemented battery storage projects with vehicle batteries in the past: Fenecon’s container concept already enables highly standardized, industrially manufactured integration of various vehicle batteries into stationary operation at its Iggensbach and Greenville (USA) sites. Many of these high-quality and long-lasting battery packs, which are not installed in vehicles due to model changes, surplus production, or missed car sales targets, will thus find sustainable use in the spirit of a circular economy.

Optimized operation extends battery life

The Mobility House Energy contributes its many years of experience in the intelligent marketing of vehicle batteries. Using proprietary algorithms, the energy storage systems are operated in a way that is both grid-friendly and particularly battery-friendly. This reduces battery aging and maximizes their service life – an important contribution to a stable, sustainable, and cost-effective renewable energy system.

Franz-Josef Feilmeier, CEO FENECON GmbH, said:

Just let that sink in: In Germany, more brand-new, high-quality, but unfortunately obsolete, electric vehicle batteries are currently being shredded each year than batteries are being installed in large-scale storage systems—which, in turn, usually come here newly produced from China.

” Our mission, and that of our dedicated partners and customers, is to use these high-quality batteries in the energy market as part of Made-in-Germany stationary storage systems, leveraging the properties of these batteries as advantages in terms of round-trip efficiency or thermal management, and thus lower operating costs.”

Marcus Fendt, CSO and Managing Director of The Mobility House, said:

Battery storage is an indispensable component of the future electricity market.

“By using vehicle batteries before, during, or after their use in electric cars, we create added value for our energy system and at the same time make electromobility more affordable.”,

Long-term partnership with a future

Fenecon will assume responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the storage facility. The project builds on the successful partnership between the two companies and demonstrates how technological innovation, sustainable use of resources, and economical solutions for the energy transition can go hand in hand.
