Netherlands: SPIE contributes to one of the largest battery projects in Europe

A strategic step in the energy transition

Developed on behalf of Lion Storage, part of the Return Energy Group, the battery park is designed to absorb fluctuations in the electricity grid and boasts a storage capacity equivalent to the consumption of 200,000 households. SPIE Nederland has been selected as the responsible partner for the engineering and execution of this project, which is expected to take two years to complete.

Multi-technical expertise for an integrated project

SPIE will draw on its extensive expertise to carry out a range of specialised installation work, including the creation of a high-voltage switchyard and the installation of lockable fencing, fire alarm systems, camera systems and fire water systems. Tesla is the main contractor and will supply the battery packs, transformers and control rooms, while SPIE will provide all installation and security according to Tesla’s strict specifications.

The project involves the special challenge of distributing the batteries in two different locations. Connecting them to TenneT’s high-voltage substations involves bridging a distance of over three kilometres and requires innovative techniques that include directional drilling and large-scale cable installation.

Megapack provide the key to a stable energy grid

With the energy transition in full swing, energy storage is becoming increasingly important. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) and parks such as ‘Mufasa’ ensure that the energy produced by wind and solar farms can be efficiently stored and available at the right time: when energy demand peaks, when renewable generation is low, or when the grid requires additional support for stability. Not only does this contribute to the reliability and affordability of the electricity grid, it also accelerates the transition to a more sustainable energy supply.

With its expertise and innovative solutions, SPIE plays a crucial role in this development and is committed to a future-proof and sustainable energy system.
