Lithium-ion battery fires: Redline and KnightTEK announce new suppression and containment systems

KnightTEK has reported that Redline Fire Solutions has launched two new products designed to address lithium-ion battery fires.

The products, Thermal Stop and Thermal Shield, are designed to suppress thermal runaway reactions, contain toxic gases, and prevent re-ignition.

According to KnightTEK, the liquid-based Thermal Stop extinguishing agent penetrates damaged cells to halt the reaction, while Thermal Shield is applied after suppression to stabilise and secure batteries during transport.

The company explained that traditional methods, such as water, are often ineffective against lithium-ion fires, which can reignite during removal and recovery.

KnightTEK confirmed that it will act as the exclusive global distributor for the two systems.

Thermal Stop extinguishing agent

According to KnightTEK, Thermal Stop has been developed to penetrate compromised cells, cooling them while interrupting the chemical chain reaction that drives thermal runaway.

The company said that the agent is applied directly to affected battery systems to rapidly suppress the fire.

It added that the product uses ingredients listed in the EPA Safer Choice Program.

The organisation explained that this classification indicates the agent meets standards for environmental responsibility while remaining effective in high-risk scenarios.

Thermal Shield containment gel

KnightTEK reported that Thermal Shield is designed to be applied once suppression is achieved.

It said that the gel acts as a physical barrier, trapping gases and encapsulating hazardous material that could otherwise escape.

The company explained that this helps prevent re-ignition during removal, storage, and transport of damaged cells.

According to KnightTEK, the product is certified to NFPA 18 standards.

It said this certification supports its use in operational firefighting conditions.

Exclusive global distribution agreement

KnightTEK confirmed that it has been appointed as the worldwide distributor for Thermal Stop and Thermal Shield.

The organisation explained that it has experience in supplying fire safety solutions for high-risk industrial environments.

According to KnightTEK, it will provide the new systems to municipal fire departments, industrial response teams, and wildland firefighting agencies.

The company added that training and procurement opportunities are available directly through its distribution channels.

Industry perspectives on lithium-ion battery fires

Chrystel Worsman of Redline Fire Solutions said:

Lithium-ion battery fires are not like anything we’ve fought before.

“Cooling alone is not enough.Thermal Stop rapidly halts the chemical reaction while Thermal Shield prevents re-ignition during transport and recovery.Together, they offer a complete solution unlike anything currently in use.”

Stephen Knight, CEO of KnightTEK, said:

Lithium-ion fires are no longer rare. They’re in our homes, our streets, and our cities.

“Our partnership with Redline allows us to deliver not just a product, but a complete, field-tested system to first responders who urgently need better tools for this new class of fire.”

Chief Phil Worsman, founder and CEO of Redline, added:

We created Thermal Stop and Thermal Shield with the fireground in mind.

“As a firefighter, I’ve seen firsthand how dangerous and unpredictable lithium-ion fires can be.These products are the result of years of field testing and innovation, driven by a mission to give firefighters the tools they need to win the fight safely and efficiently.”

Relevance for fire and safety professionals

Lithium-ion battery fires are a growing operational challenge across multiple environments, including electric vehicles, energy storage, and consumer devices.

These new products have been designed with input from frontline fire service professionals and distributed by a company specialising in high-risk response solutions.

For fire and rescue services, the availability of an agent-and-gel system provides an alternative to traditional suppression methods.

Its design addresses suppression, containment, and safe removal, which are critical stages in managing lithium-ion battery incidents.
