LG Energy Solution’s Technology Boosts Solid-state Battery Charging Speed by 10 Times

LG Energy Solution has developed a technology that can increase the charging speed of solid-state batteries – often referred to as the “dream battery” – by tenfold.

On Feb. 12, LG Energy Solution announced that a research paper titled,

The Effect of Metal Crystal Growth Direction on Battery Charging Speed and Safety,

co-authored with renowned solid-state battery expert Professor Shirley Meng of the University of Chicago, has been published in the energy journal Joule.

LG Energy Solution has been conducting innovative research on solid-state battery technology in collaboration with Professor Meng’s research teams at the University of Chicago and the Frontier Research Lab (FRL) at UC San Diego. Professor Meng introduced an ultra-thin silicon layer to solid-state batteries. This technique controls the growth direction of lithium metal crystals, enabling uniform electrodeposition–the process where ions from the electrolyte adhere to the electrode surface under an electric field.

The research team explained,

This technology can improve the charging speed of solid-state batteries by ten times while significantly enhancing battery safety.

LG Energy Solution expects to accelerate the development of “Anode-free solid-state batteries” based on these findings. Anode-free solid-state batteries refer to solid-state batteries that remove the anode material from the existing anode, utilizing lithium metal by reducing lithium ions that migrate from the cathode to the anode during charging.

This approach reduces battery weight and volume while maximizing energy density. However, uneven lithium metal deposition has previously led to issues such as performance degradation and reduced battery lifespan. This research provides a crucial technological breakthrough to address these challenges.

A representative from LG Energy Solution stated,

With growing demand for electric vehicles and energy storage systems (ESS), collaboration between manufacturing expertise and cutting-edge university research is vital for next-generation battery development.

“We will continue to enhance customer value and solidify our leadership in the battery market through ongoing technological advancements and partnerships.”

LG Energy Solution has also established FRL joint research centers with domestic and international universities and institutions to spearhead research and secure core technologies for next-generation batteries, aiming to widen its technological lead over competitors.
