Large-scale industrial power storage from e-car batteries – Official starting signal for FENECON CarBatteryReFactory.

The CarBatteryReFactory from FENECON, leading provider of electricity storage systems with a smart energy management system, has officially gone into operation. In the ultra-modern factory in Iggensbach, Lower Bavaria (Deggendorf district), new obsolete electric vehicle batteries are being turned into large-scale storage units that are urgently needed for the energy transition. Production of the home storage energy management system was also relocated to the new factory, significantly enlarged and automated. The factory’s production capacity is around 500 large storage units and 30,000 home storage units per year. As a particularly innovative and CO2-saving project, the FENECON CarBatteryReFactory was funded by the EU and the Free State of Bavaria: The investment amount for the first expansion stage was around 25 million euros, of which the Bavarian Economic Development Agency contributed 1.7 million and the EU Innovation Fund 4.5 million euros.

Sophisticated energy concept

On the 24,000 square meter site on the A3, modern production and storage halls optimized for large electricity storage systems as well as a development laboratory, offices and training rooms were created in just over a year of construction. The new plant will create around 100 permanent jobs in the region. All parking spaces will be equipped with charging stations, and the company fleet will be completely electric. Fast chargers are also available for cars and trucks. FENECON uses all suitable roof and facade surfaces for optimal solar power production from the 500 kWp system output – with emphasis on local components. The heat is supplied entirely electrically with large heat pumps that can also operate in cooling mode in summer, as well as electric peak load heaters. The FEMS energy management system controls all producers, consumers and the large storage systems with a total of 1,000 kW and 1,800 kWh, which also cap the load peaks of industrial operations. Grid power is purchased using a dynamic electricity tariff at quarter-hourly prices based on the in-house FEMS app Dynamic electricity tariff, an AI-based individual energy schedule with up to 34-hour forecasts, as is also used by many users with FENECON home storage systems.

Upscaled serial production workflows

The home storage line has been running since January, and large-scale production of the FENECON Industrial models followed in February. Only new electric vehicle batteries from German premium vehicle manufacturers are used in the commercial and industrial storage systems with capacities from 82 kWh to 1,288 kWh. The three series storage platforms from FENECON take full advantage of the various advantages of these batteries – such as the high product quality and long service life, the particularly high efficiency, the easy transportability and the liquid-based temperature management.

High-ranking participants from politics, business and science

At the inauguration of the specialized electricity storage production site on March 27th, FENECON welcomed numerous guests of honor from politics, business and science. Among others: Hubert Aiwanger, Bavarian State Minister for Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, Christian Bernreiter, Bavarian State Minister for Housing, Construction and Transport, Deggendorf District Administrator Bernd Sibler, the members of the Bundestag (MdB) Erhard Grundl, Thomas Erndl , Rita Hagl-Kehl and Muhanad Al-Halak as well as the members of the Bavarian state parliament (MdL) Josef Heisl, Stefan Meyer, Ruth MĂĽller, Martin Behringer, Toni Schuberl and Johannes Becher, the mayor of Iggensbach, who will be in office until March 31, 2024, Wolfgang Haider, the vice president of the government of Lower Bavaria Monika Linseisen, Cristian Sales Agut and Alexandre Cobbaert from the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), Alexander Schreiner, general manager of the Lower Bavaria Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Josef Hinterschwepfinger jun., managing director of the general contractor, the head of the TH Deggendorf Prof. Waldemar Berg and Prof. Dr. Michael Sterner from OTH Regensburg and managing director of the IFES Institute for Energy Storage GmbH.

High demand for commercial and industrial electricity storage

The expansion continues

An exciting outlook was also given at the opening ceremony: The second FENECON CarBatteryReFactory is currently being built in South Carolina, as the US market also has surplus electric vehicle batteries and large power storage units are needed.
