Japanese firm’s electric SUV offers 807-mile range with LFP battery

Making its debut at the Shanghai Motor Show in late April, the Mazda EZ-60 signifies the brand’s ambitious leap into the electric vehicle market.

This all-electric SUV is set to officially launch in China later this year, building anticipation during its current static display tour across major cities.

All-electric and gasoline-assisted versions

Expanding its presence in the electric SUV segment, Mazda is introducing the EZ-60 in China with two distinct powertrain options. The fully electric model delivers 255 horsepower (190 kW) through a rear-mounted motor and uses a CATL lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, offering up to 373 miles of range under China’s CLTC cycle.

The extended-range version of the EZ-60 uses the same 255-horsepower electric motor as the fully electric model, serving as the sole source of propulsion. A 97-horsepower 1.5-liter gasoline engine sits under the hood, functioning as a generator to recharge the battery either automatically when the charge is low or manually at the driver’s request.

This variant is equipped with a smaller 31.73 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which provides up to 99 miles of electric-only driving range based on the CLTC testing cycle. It also supports 800-volt fast charging. For drivers seeking longer journeys, an extended-range version combines a smaller battery with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine, achieving over 807 miles of total range.

The EZ-60 has been tailored specifically for the Chinese market, incorporating localized features such as voice recognition that supports multiple regional dialects and seamless integration with popular apps like WeChat. Its advanced driver assistance systems have been fine-tuned for China’s road environments, with enhanced algorithms for detecting pedestrians and cyclists.

The SUV also features a reinforced body structure made with a high proportion of ultra-high-strength steel, including 2000 MPa-grade components in critical load-bearing areas to boost safety and rigidity.

EZ-60 racks up 20,000 pre-orders in China

Co-developed with state-owned automaker Changan, the EZ-60 will be produced at their joint venture manufacturing facility. It is built on Changan’s EPA1 platform, which also supports several models from both Changan and its EV brand Deepal.

The same architecture underpins the Mazda EZ-6 sedan—an electrified, rear-wheel drive successor to the discontinued Mazda 6. Branded as the Mazda 6e for export, this model has been confirmed for sale in Europe, including the UK.

In China, the demand for Mazda’s upcoming EZ-60 SUV is gaining momentum, with over 20,000 pre-orders already placed—most of them for the extended-range version. The vehicle is currently on static display at Changan Mazda dealerships, and test drives are set to begin in July ahead of its official launch.
