Iberdrola España inaugurates Spain’s largest energy storage battery, with a capacity of 120 megawatt-hours, at the Campo Arañuelo complex (Cáceres)

  • The project includes two LFP lithium-ion battery modules, each with a capacity of approximately 60 megawatt-hours, connected to the existing Campo Arañuelo I and II solar power plants
  • The facility allows for the storage of part of the solar energy generated, shifting its use to times of greater need for the power grid and improving the integration of renewables

Iberdrola España has inaugurated Spain’s largest energy storage battery, associated with the Campo Arañuelo I and II photovoltaic plants, which has a capacity of 58 MW and 120 MWh of storage capacity.

The new infrastructure, located in the municipality of Belvís de Monroy (Cáceres), marks a new milestone in Iberdrola España’s strategy to promote energy storage, facilitate the connection of new demand requiring firm power and thereby accelerate the electrification of the economy, as explained by Iberdrola España CEO Mario Ruiz-Tagle.

Specifically the project at Campo Arañuelo incorporates two LFP lithium-ion battery modules, each with a capacity of approximately 60 megawatt-hours, connected to the existing Campo Arañuelo I and Campo Arañuelo II photovoltaic plants. As a result the facilities will now operate as more flexible and manageable infrastructure, capable of storing part of the solar energy produced and shifting its use to times of greater need for the system — a critical capability in the context of growing renewable energy penetration.

During the inauguration ceremony, attended by the Regional Minister of Industry, Energy, Science and Territory of the Regional Government of Extremadura, Mercedes Morán; the Government Delegate in the region, José Luis Quintana; as well as the CEO of Iberdrola Energía Sostenible España, Julio Castro; and mayors and officials from various municipalities in the region, Ruiz-Tagle noted that initiatives such as the one at Campo Arañuelo are “pioneering” in the Spanish energy sector and enable “electrification to advance steadily.”

In this regard he indicated that Iberdrola Spain has been committed to storage for years and is leading this transformation, as the energy company accounts for the vast majority of battery storage in operation in Spain, with nearly 200 megawatts currently in service.

For her part, the Regional Minister of Industry, Energy, Science and Territory, Mercedes Morán, noted,

That this new infrastructure is a “top-tier investment” that demonstrates that Extremadura is establishing itself “as an energy hub combining generation capacity, innovation and stability for the electricity system.

She indicated that energy storage can serve as a driver enabling the region to harness its enormous potential as a leader in photovoltaic energy. She concluded by emphasizing that “la transición energética debe generar desarrollo industrial, empleo y oportunidades para el territorio.”

The project received support from the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE) as part of the call for grants for innovative energy storage projects combined with renewable energy facilities, included in the PERTE ERHA program.

With the inauguration of this battery Iberdrola España consolidates Extremadura as one of the leading regions in renewable innovation and energy storage. Campo Arañuelo was already a pioneering site in 2021 when Arañuelo III became the first photovoltaic project in Spain to incorporate an energy storage battery with a capacity of 3 megawatts and 9 megawatt-hours.
