Gotion Investment – Spanish Government promotes strategic investment of almost €1B that will place Spain in the European vanguard of electric batteries
Ministers Hereu and Puente present the Gotion project, which will generate thousands of jobs and strengthen industrial leadership in sustainable mobility.
The project, backed by €138 million in public aid from PERTE VEC, is one of the biggest recent industrial boosts in the field of electrification.
This project is part of a broader strategy to turn Spain into a European hub for electric and sustainable mobility.
The ministers have highlighted the Government’s commitment to legal certainty, administrative efficiency and job stability, key factors for the implementation of industrial projects of this nature.
The Minister of Industry and Tourism, Jordi Hereu, and the Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, presented today in Valladolid the industrial project of the company Gotion, an investment of more than 940 million euros destined for the development of batteries for electric vehicles, which will position Castilla y León and Spain as key players in the new sustainable mobility.
The project, backed by €138 million in public funding from the PERTE Electric and Connected Vehicle program, is one of the biggest recent industrial boosts in the field of electrification.
This initiative reflects the public-private collaboration model advocated by the Executive to accelerate the transformation of the productive fabric and attract high value-added investments.
During the presentation, the ministers highlighted the economic and social impact of the project, which is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, helping to boost the local economy and retain population in the area.
A key project for European strategic autonomy
Gotion’s initiative is structured around two main axes: the manufacture of cathodes, an essential component for batteries, and the development of advanced battery recycling systems, aimed at recovering strategic raw materials.
This comprehensive approach strengthens the electric vehicle value chain in Spain and contributes to strengthening European industrial autonomy in a sector considered critical.
Electrification is accelerating in Spain
The Government has stressed that this project is part of a broader strategy to turn Spain into a European hub for electric and sustainable mobility, relying on instruments such as the PERTE VEC, which has already mobilized more than 3 billion euros and benefited nearly 400 companies throughout the automotive value chain.
This program has been key to attracting large industrial investments, such as the plants in Sagunto, Navalmoral de la Mata or Zaragoza, consolidating a production network linked to the electrification of the automobile.
The growth of electric vehicles in Spain supports this industrial commitment. In May 2026 alone, more than 12,300 electric vehicles were registered, representing a year-on-year increase of over 30% and a market share exceeding 10%. So far this year, electrified passenger cars have grown by 45%, demonstrating a structural shift in the sector.
Stability and future for the industry
The ministers have highlighted the Government’s commitment to legal certainty, administrative efficiency and job stability, key factors for the implementation of industrial projects of this nature.
They also highlighted the social dialogue with strategic companies like Renault, which is fundamental to strengthening the sector’s competitiveness in territories like Valladolid.
The Executive has described Gotion’s arrival as a historic opportunity to advance decarbonization, generate quality employment and consolidate a more innovative and sustainable production model.
With initiatives like this, Spain strengthens its position in the global race to lead electric mobility and takes a decisive step towards a more competitive and resilient industrial future.
