Germany – funding for private charging stations for battery electric cars in residential buildings topped up again by a further 300M EUR.

The promotion of private charging stations for electric cars in residential buildings will once again be increased by a further 300 million euros and thus extended. With a subsidy of 900 euros, the purchase and installation of the so-called wallboxes are supported. A total of 800 million euros in federal funds are now available for this purpose.

Andreas Scheuer, Federal Transport Minister:

From tomorrow, German citizens will again be able to secure a 900 euro subsidy from the federal government for their own charging station at home.

“More than half a million applications show the enormous demand for this funding. My thanks go to Olaf Scholz, who is providing us with a further 300 million euros so that we can continue our wallbox funding. Charging must be possible anywhere and at any time.”

“A comprehensive and user-friendly charging infrastructure is a prerequisite for more people to switch to climate-friendly e-cars.”

Current application status:

More than 620,000 charging points were applied for as of July 2021. An average of 2,500 applications were submitted every day.

Information on funding:

Who can submit applications?

  • Sponsors of investment measures (e.B private individuals, homeowners’ associations, housing companies, housing cooperatives and property developers) for the construction of a charging station for electric cars in the non-publicly accessible area of self-used or rented residential buildings.

What is funded?

  • Funding will be provided for the acquisition and construction of a brand-new, non-publicly accessible charging station including the electrical connection (grid connection) as well as the associated necessary ancillary work (definition of the total costs see under “How is funding provided?”) on parking spaces of existing residential buildings in Germany, if, among other things:
    • the charging station has a normal charging power of 11 kW,
    • the electricity comes 100 percent from renewable energies,
    • the charging station is intelligent and controllable (with a view to grid convenience)

How is funding provided?

The funding is provided by an investment grant, which is transferred to your bank account after completion of your project. The subsidy amounts to a flat rate of 900 euros per charging point. If the total cost of the project falls below the grant amount, no funding will be granted.

The grant can be applied for at KfW via the grant portal and must be submitted before the start of the project. When determining the total costs, costs for the following services can be taken into account:

  • Charging
  • Energy management system/charging management system for controlling charging stations
  • Electrical connection (mains connection)
  • Necessary electrical installation work (e.g. earthworks)
