Fraunhofer IST – Solid electrolytes, the basis for the new generation of batteries?
For the next generation of batteries, the use of a solid-state electrolyte is a promising alternative. These offer a number of advantages over conventional lithium-ion batteries that use a liquid electrolyte. For example, solid-state electrolytes are considered non-flammable, cannot leak and enable a significant increase in energy and power density.
Together with project partners, the Fraunhofer Institute for Coating and Surface Technology IST is working within the BMBF project “BiSSFest” to be able to produce safe and powerful solid-state batteries.
The aim of the project, which was launched in December 2021, is the production of solid-state batteries on a pilot scale in order to enable a long-term path to industrial production within Germany.
