Firefighters urge caution after lithium-ion battery explodes in boy’s pocket.

From electric vehicles to household tools, the use of lithium-ion-powered batteries is on the rise as the U.S. increases the demand for products that require extended power.

Aurora Fire Rescue told FOX31 that large items used for transportation, like scooters and e-bikes, and household items should be closely monitored while in use and charging.

Lt. Shannon Hardi told FOX31, said:

If you leave your lithium battery, or any battery for that matter, on the charger too long, it’ll get too hot and it can spontaneously combust.

Jennie McCabe’s 14-year-old son sustained second and third-degree burns on his leg after a lithium battery used for his flashlight exploded. He is recovering but needed skin graft surgery.

Jennie McCabe’s, said:

His extra battery was in his cargo pocket, and they were playing a game at the campsite, and it exploded.

Large cities like New York reported more than 660 battery-related fires since 2019. While these types of fires are not as common in Colorado, with less than five in some smaller communities, firefighters said the number is rising in some areas.

“Be sure to buy certified batteries, you should be sure to use the provided charging cords. Don’t buy aftermarket cords,” said Hardi.

Most fires occur when lithium batteries are charging. Items should be removed from the charger when it reaches full power. Keep charging items away from your house’s exit areas.

“It’s important to monitor batteries closely at all times and never charge e-bikes or scooters next to doorways,” said Hardi.

Unplug and monitor any device or product if it gets too hot or you notice a strange smell, changing color or an altered shape. Call 911 immediately if you see smoke or a spark.
