Climate-friendly batteries for the mobility of tomorrow – BatWoMan project aims to reduce costs and energy consumption in production

One way to achieve more sustainable mobility is through battery cells. However, their resource-saving and climate-friendly production represents a challenge. In the “BatWoMan” project, in which Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is also involved, researchers want to develop innovative and sustainable processes for CO2-develop and implement neutral battery production in Europe.

In the future, they want to reduce the costs of cell production by around 60 percent and halve energy consumption.

Pilot plant to structure battery materials by laser

Niclas Straßburger of KIT’s Institute for Applied Materials – Applied Materials Physics, said:

At KIT, we contribute, among other things, our expertise in the field of laser-assisted generation of 3D batteries.

“We use ultrashort laser pulses to shape battery materials to increase electrochemical performance, double battery life and make battery manufacturing highly efficient.” To this end, the researchers are setting up a pilot plant in which they can structure battery materials over a large area using a roll-to-roll process using lasers and which can be integrated into battery production in the long term.

Further focal points of the project are the development and implementation of resource-saving innovations in cell construction, such as electrolyte filling and cell conditioning. By means of a platform controlled by artificial intelligence, the project partners constantly monitor the sustainability and efficiency of the proposed production steps.

The BatWoMan project – “Carbon Neutral European Battery Cell Production with Sustainable, Innovative Processes and 3D Electrode Design to Manufacture” – runs for a period of three years and is coordinated by the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH.
