Energizing the Future – Sion Power CEO Tracy Kelley Unveils the Revolutionary Licerion® Battery Technology – An Interview with Batteries News.

Sion Power is moving the rechargeable battery industry forward with its Licerion® technology.

Licerion® is an advanced approach to lithium-metal batteries containing up to twice the energy in the same size and weight battery, compared to a traditional lithium-ion battery. Licerion® batteries have the potential to significantly enhance the performance of commercial and consumer electric vehicles. Sion Power’s technology uses compression in a lithium metal battery to enhance safety, battery life and recharging rates. The company plans to build a fully automated manufacturing line to produce high quality large format lithium-metal cells for testing and market development by automotive OEMs and cell manufacturers.

Based in Arizona, it recently announced funding from the leading global battery manufacturer, LG Energy Solution. Additional investors include Jim Simons’ Euclidean Capital and former Google CEO, Eric Schmidt’s Hillspire LLC.

Tell us more about your proprietary battery technology and how it plays into the EV industry?

Sion Power’s LicerionTM battery technology is based on the combination of several technologies that work together as a system to enable more energy dense batteries. At the center of this system, we have our proprietary lithium metal anode that enables increases in energy density up to a factor of 2x or 40% less weight for the same energy output. This is a game changer for the EV market because it reduces range anxiety, allows for smaller, lighter batteries and is projected to reduce the price per kWh versus conventional lithium-ion batteries since it uses less lithium.

What advantages do lithium metal batteries have over the standard lithium-ion batteries available today?

By leveraging our LicerionTM lithium metal anode technology we lessen customers range anxiety by providing up to 2x the driving range of current conventional batteries. It can also provide the current driving range of conventional lithium-ion batteries but with a smaller and 40% lighter battery. The LicerionTM system uses less lithium than current lithium-ion batteries thus at scale this will lower the cost per KWh versus conventional lithium-ion.

How does Sion Power Technology resolve range anxiety?

By delivering approximately twice the energy density than other technologies, our technology provides double the driving range and can quickly charge a vehicle to 80% in around 15 minutes.

Can it be used with different chemistries like LFP, LTO or NA?

The Sion Power anode is cathode agnostic; therefore, it brings similar benefits to all battery chemistries.

What is the future of battery technology like given the various new technologies?

We believe that the current lithium-ion battery technology will gradually transition to a lithium-metal enhanced platform much like the one that our company is developing. The reason being is that the supply chains and the manufacturing processes are very similar and the more that you deviate from standard technology, the higher the barrier of entry.

Do you anticipate any supply chain and manufacturing difficulties with Sion Power’s new technology?

We are only exposed to potential shortages of lithium. However, given that the Licerion technology is projected to use less lithium than other lithium metal-based batteries, we are less exposed than others. Our technology is extremely flexible and cathode agnosticism which gives us the flexibility to support different kinds of battery solutions.

Will your technology be used internationally?

Yes, our technology is perfectly positioned to address the needs of the EV market on a large scale. This is a global market that we can support and deliver to.

Are you looking for development partners and when will your cells go into production?

We are working with tier one cell manufacturers and automotive OEMs in joint developments. We anticipate that we will go into production by 2027.

What are Sion Power’s next steps now that you recently raised funding?

Now that we’ve raised funding from prominent and strategic investors, our goal is to finalize the release of our 56Ah EV ready cell before the end of this year for initial demonstration purposes and continue with our partners to commercialize our LicerionTM lithium metal anode. Also, we’re planning to develop a large-scale anode manufacturing facility in 2025 and license our technology to select partners.
