Enel – Batteries that are increasingly efficient and reliable thanks to predictive diagnostics.

To improve the efficiency and safety of batteries, it’s important to monitor their performance in real time, which is why EGP has adopted innovative predictive diagnostics software, already in use in five of our plants.

Innovative software for advanced battery monitoring and diagnostics: this is the subject of a collaboration Enel Green Power has launched with German battery diagnostics pioneer volytica diagnostics GmbH to improve the efficiency and safety of energy storage systems.

Electricity storage systems – such as batteries – are a key enabler for the energy transition to clean energy: because they’re naturally subject to variations in availability, renewable sources such as wind and photovoltaics need systems capable of storing excess energy produced during times of sun and wind availability and returning it at times of peak consumption in order to be fully exploited and integrated into the electricity system.

Storage is therefore indispensable for the development of renewables: the question is how to ensure its necessary reliability and flexibility for end-users’ needs. Batteries that are integrated with power generation systems, like all industrial components, need to be managed as well as possible in order to ensure that they have a longer and more efficient life, optimizing the continuous energy charge and discharge cycles to which they’re subjected.

Earlier detection of anomalies

The first step to managing your assets efficiently is to know them well, by following their behavior and performance carefully in real time.

Software from volytica – a company established as a spin-off from Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft – identifies and analyzes critical battery performance indicators, facilitating earlier detection of possible anomalies. This makes it possible to take action in the management of potential problems and differences in functioning of the various elements that make up each battery and ensure continuity of service in an efficient manner.

We’ve started the implementation of this new solution, which is initially being tested in an innovation project at five plants in Italy and abroad; after one year of operation, we’ll be able to evaluate the performance of the new diagnostic system under real conditions.

Claudius Jehle, founder and CEO of volytica:

Collaborating with Enel Green Power on this transformational journey is an honor.

“Together we’re working toward the future of energy storage, benefiting renewables, grids, and their users by focusing on one of the most important components of the energy transition”.

Marina Lombardi, Enel Green Power’s Head of Innovation:

One of Enel Green Power’s strategic innovation priorities is the integration of new energy storage technologies with renewable plants to ensure stability and greater flexibility in the electricity system.

“Since these are young technologies, of which operating experience is still limited, it’s particularly important to have systems that monitor and help us manage them efficiently, in order to maintain their performance over time.”
