Designwerk launches new generation of battery systems.

The battery systems from Swiss electromobility specialist Designwerk are proving their worth in daily use in electric trucks. Now the manufacturer is launching a new generation and expanding the portfolio to include batteries with a capacity of 125 and 250 kilowatt hours. At the same time, they have a high energy density with a relatively small construction volume. This makes new configurations of up to 1000 kilowatt hours possible.

The first battery systems from Designwerk have been in use since 2015 and are proving their worth day after day. They are currently used in particular in electric trucks. About eight years after the completion of the first own battery systems, Designwerk launches a new generation and expands the portfolio by four models. Battery systems with a capacity of 125 and 250 kilowatt hours are now being offered with voltage options of 400 or 800 volts maximum each.

The new batteries have a high energy density with a relatively small construction volume. The gravimetric energy density amounts to 181 Wh/kg, the volumetric energy density to 257 Wh/l. This enables high ranges in practice. In addition, the battery systems allow the highest charging rates. The good cycle stability leads to a long service life.

New generation allows configuration of battery packs up to 1000 kWh

By introducing the battery system with a gross capacity of 254.2 kilowatt hours, Designwerk brings to the market one of the largest systems for electric vehicles. In combination with a High-Voltage Distribution Unit (HVDU), which interconnects the battery systems on a vehicle, individual battery packs from 125 kWh to 1000 kWh can be configured.

This applies to system voltages of 400 V as well as 800 V. The new batteries are used in particular in trucks and other commercial vehicles for on- and off-road applications.

As with all battery systems from Designwerk, a specially developed battery management system (BMS) monitors all system parameters and specifies the maximum available power in each case depending on the state of charge and temperature.

The design also includes a pre-charge, interlock, fuses and cooling plates for thermal management as standard, which are integrated into an aluminum housing and 24 mm insulation on all sides. Thus, the battery cells are protected from mechanical and thermal influences.

By expanding its portfolio, Designwerk delivers more options to meet individual installation space and performance needs.
