CUSTOMCELLS welcomes PPG partnership in the Cellforce Group.
CUSTOMCELLS®, one of the leading companies in the development and series production of state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery cells, sees the joint venture with Porsche on a good track to achieve even greater sustainability. To eliminate the use of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, the Cellforce Group (CFG) is entering into a partnership with the US materials specialist PPG.
PPG is a global supplier of paints, coatings, and specialty materials – and will supply cathode binder systems, which are free of N-Methylpyrrolidone (NMP) solvent, to the Cellforce Group. NMP, which is widely used in electrode manufacturing, has been identified as a reproductive hazard by several global regulatory agencies.
Leopold König, co-founder and CEO of CUSTOMCELLS®.
We founded Cellforce Group with the ambition to develop high-performance batteries with a holistic approach.
“The replacement of chemicals such as NMP plays an important role for this. As a part of this joint venture, we appreciate the new partnership with PPG.”
Torge Thönnessen, CTO of Cellforce Group.
Our cooperation with PPG is an important step for the Cellforce Group.
“The use of a new type of cathode binder provides various benefits for battery production and brings positive features for the cell itself”.
“This is in line with our goal of combining economic growth with a high level of innovation and a simultaneous reduction of negative environmental impacts in Germany as a manufacturing location.”
CUSTOMCELLS® founded the joint venture in 2021 together with the sports car manufacturer Porsche. CUSTOMCELLS® itself develops battery cells at the Itzehoe site and operates one of the most modern cell production lines in Europe at the Tübingen site.
Markus Vogt, PPG general manager of mobility.
PPG is eager to partner with the Cellforce Group to build the next generation of battery cell technology that will define a new level of sustainability for the electro-mobility segment.
“Additionally, the partnership enables collaboration to provide critical technology development to increase cell performance and safety.”
PPG is helping vehicle, battery and component manufacturers accelerate the development of tomorrow’s automotive energy storage solutions.
The company’s broad-based materials expertise covers virtually every area of Li-ion battery design and construction, helping customers boost energy density, extend service life, improve safety, increase manufacturing throughput and reduce cost per kilowatt hour.
