Changan aims to have all-solid-state batteries in prototype cars by end of 2025, offering over 1,500 km of range

Changan Automobile (SHE: 000625) plans to start loading all-solid-state batteries onto prototype vehicles by the end of this year, as local automakers target next-generation battery technology.

Changan is committed to enabling energy freedom for its customers and is accelerating progress on next-generation batteries, the Chinese auto giant wrote in the minutes of an investor communications conference released yesterday.

The company’s Jinzhongzhao all-solid-state batteries are expected to make their debut in functional prototype vehicles by the end of this year, it said.

Changan aims to validate the solid-state batteries in vehicles by 2026 and advance the all-solid-state batteries to gradual mass production by 2027, according to the minutes.

Changan said,

The all-solid-state batteries have an energy density of up to 400 Wh/kg and can provide a range of more than 1,500 kilometers on a full charge, significantly alleviating range anxiety,

It said,

Utilizing AI remote diagnostic technology, Changan has improved safety by 70 percent on the solid-state batteries, aiming to completely solve the safety hazards of the liquid battery era,

Changan’s announced plans for mass production of all-solid-state batteries are similar to those of other local car and battery makers.

In April 2024, Wu Kai, chief scientist at CATL (SHE: 300750), the world’s largest power battery maker, said at a battery industry event that the company was aiming to produce all-solid-state batteries in small batches by 2027.

Liquid lithium batteries can achieve energy densities of 350 Wh/kg, but it’s difficult for them to continue to improve, while all-solid-state batteries are expected to have energy densities of 500 Wh/kg, Wu said at the time.

On February 15, BYD’s (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) battery business CTO Sun Huajun told a forum that the company expected to begin “demonstration use” of all-solid-state batteries around 2027.

True large-scale adoption of all-solid-state batteries may not be realized until after 2030, Sun said at the time.

Back to Changan, the automaker mentioned its all-solid-state battery at an event last month, saying it planned to start mass production by 2027.
