Cause of fire at GM Battery Factory ZERO plant in Detroit revealed following investigation.

The Detroit Fire Department responded to a fire at the General Motors Factory ZERO plant.

Fire Chief James Harris confirmed that multiple crews were at the scene and were working to control the fire.

A GM spokesperson said the company was made aware of the fire and all employees have been accounted for.

The fire was not vehicle-related and happened near a shipping dock area, according to GM. The company said it canceled two work shifts after the fire.

The investigation found that a forklift accidentally punctured a container with battery materials and caused the fire, a General Motors spokesperson said Wednesday.

Most departments are operating again at the plant, including the vehicle assembly, the spokesperson said.

Other employees are expected to be notified by their leadership when to return.

The incident remains under investigation.
