CATL aims to have 10,000 battery swap stations.

CATL said it plans to build 10,000 battery swap stations, marking the first time the power battery giant has revealed specific targets regarding the business.

Gao Huan, battery maker’s chief technology officer (CTO) said yesterday at the 2024 World Power Battery Conference held yesterday in Yibin, Sichuan province, southwest China:

In terms of plans for battery swap stations, CATL is targeting 10,000.

In the short term, CATL aims to have 3,000 battery swap stations by 2027, Gao said.

The battery maker aims to expand its battery swap station network to 30 cities with more than 500 stations by 2025.

By 2026, CATL aims to have more than 1,500 battery swap stations covering more than 70 cities.

CATL launched its battery swap brand EVOGO on January 18, 2022, and began moving forward with the construction of battery swap stations, making it a major player in the space after Nio (NYSE: NIO).

Nio’s vice president for power business, Shen Fei, welcomed the launch of EVOGO at the time, viewing CATL’s move was a recognition of its unique business model.

As of September 1, Nio had 2,500 battery swap stations in China, the largest number of such facilities.

EVOGO offers Choco-SEB (swapping electric block) battery blocks, where vehicles can use one or more blocks to match different mileage requirements.

EVOGO is open to offering the service to all car companies and aims to build the world’s largest service network in two to three years, CATL said at the January 2022 launch of the brand.

The service is already available in cities including Xiamen, Fuzhou, Guiyang and Hefei, with Xiamen having the highest number of CATL battery swap stations at 12, according to figures shared by EVOGO on Weibo.
