BBC – The dangers of lithium power banks

From 1st October 2025, airline, Emirates banned the use of power banks in-flight, due to cases of fires, explosions, and toxic gases caused by the lithium batteries hidden inside.

Lithium battery failures are relatively rare, but in the event of a malfunction, they can present a serious fire risk.

To check whether your device is safe, search the Electrical Safety First, external or GOV.UK website, external for product recalls and alerts.

Any items that have a plug, use batteries, need charging, or have a picture of a crossed-out wheelie bin, should be recycled at Recycling Centres, electrical item bring banks or via electrical retailers and not thrown in your household bin.
