Battery Production – PEM to Enable Real-Time Slurry Measurement during Mixing Process
The Chair of Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components (PEM) of RWTH Aachen University, which specializes in digitalization, and industry partner SURAGUS have launched the “MixItUp” joint project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The aim of the three-year project is to develop a novel measurement method for the in-situ characterization of slurries in battery production.
PEM Director Professor Achim Kampker, says:
The quality of the slurry is crucial for the performance of battery cells, but current methods for its electrical characterization involve time-consuming laboratory measurements that do not allow real-time process control,
The aim of the project is therefore to develop an in-line measurement method for use during the mixing process. The measured values will record electrical conductivity, homogeneity, and particle distribution and be compared with process parameters in a database.
PEM Management Member Professor Heiner Heimes, says:
Eventually, we will enable continuous monitoring, early fault detection, and optimized process control
The method will first be validated in a test rig and then transferred to a pilot line.
