Battery manufacturer CATL is looking for experts from Thuringia
The Chinese battery manufacturer CATL in Arnstadt, Thuringia, is continuing to ramp up its production.
The plant is currently operating at a high level of capacity in order to meet customer requirements,
a company spokesman said in response to a dpa inquiry. According to experts, CATL operates one of the largest battery cell factories for electric cars in Europe in Thuringia. It officially went into operation in 2023.
The ramp-up of the plant also depends on further market developments, said the spokesman. Contemporary Amperex Technology Thuringia GmbH supplies various automobile manufacturers in Germany and Europe. Additional specialists are currently being sought for the plant, with the focus on employees from the region.
Own vocational training at CATL
The battery manufacturer says it currently employs around 1,700 people. Some of them are specialists from China who are involved in installing technology and starting up the factory. Some of them will gradually return to China, it said.
CATL is increasingly committed to vocational training at the plant in Thuringia’s large “Erfurter Kreuz” industrial park. There are currently around 30 young people in training.

According to the Association of the Automotive Industry, the production of electric cars increased again in Germany last year. According to the association, a total of almost 1.3 million electric cars were produced in Germany by the end of November 2024 – more than in the whole of 2023.
Second logistics center near Weimar
According to earlier information from CATL, up to 1.8 billion euros will be invested in the factory in the “Erfurter Kreuz” industrial estate near Arnstadt, without any major state funding. It is a new building complex approximately 500 meters long. The company also maintains a logistics center near Erfurt, and a second one is being built near Nohra between Erfurt and Weimar.
CATL says it is one of the largest producers of battery cells in the world. Arnstadt is the company’s first plant outside of China, with another in Eastern Europe to follow.
