Battery, Fuel Cell and Electrolyzer Production – Innovative Process Technologies: PEM Extends Collaboration with BST.
The Chair of Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components (PEM) of RWTH Aachen University and mechanical engineering specialist BST plan to extend their long-standing collaboration with a view to innovative process technologies in the context of battery, fuel cell and electrolyzer production. To this end, both partners have signed a Memorandum of Understanding of intent on several key project areas.
Professor Achim Kampker, PEM Director, said:
The industrialization of production is one of the major tasks for a widespread establishment of battery and fuel cell technologies.
For this reason, the two partners plan to work together on different aspects of development, such as the potential transferability of innovations from battery production to fuel cell production, and the industrialization of smart-data approaches. The partners could also work together on sub-processes in the drying of battery electrodes, on certain parameters in fuel cell and electrolyzer production, and on alternative membrane materials and their coating.
Collaboration on several levels since 2017
PEM and BST – a subsidiary of elexis AG, which specializes in production automation, drive technology, and quality control – have been collaborating in various areas since 2017. For example, the two players were involved in the joint “Fit4E-Mobility” industry workshop, in the installation of a web guiding system in PEMʼs Electric Mobility Laboratory (eLab) of RWTH Aachen University, and in a consortium project with BMW on the topic of industrializing fuel cells. Since 2022, PEM and BST have also been partnering with the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Battery Cell Production FFB in Münster and with the German Engineering Federation (VDMA).
PEMʼs “Electric Mobility” book receives 825,000 downloads
As a full-service provider of quality assurance systems and solutions for web-processing industries, BST has also facilitated the open access publication of PEMʼs 700-page “Electric Mobility – Fundamentals of a Progressive Technology” book, which has been downloaded around 825,000 times since its publication in September 2023.
