A strong project for BatteryCityMünster – BATTL3 – another contribution to the energy transition in Europe
A major project for BatteryCityMünster and North Rhine-Westphalia as the number one energy state: On Tuesday, the official work began on the cutting-edge research building BATTL3 of Technologieförderung Münster GmbH (TFM), which is receiving plenty of advance praise.
At the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony in Münster Science Park, Münster’s Mayor Tilman Fuchs and North Rhine-Westphalia’s Minister of Economic Affairs and Deputy Minister-President Mona Neubaur spoke of another strategically important building block for the BatteryCityMünster project in North Rhine-Westphalia, a leading energy state. Guests from business, science, and politics also praised the construction project as a significant contribution to the energy transition in Europe. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the EU are providing €6.75 million in funding for the project, which has an investment volume of nearly €14 million. The name BATTL3 plays on the word “battery” and refers to the third laboratory building on the grounds of the Münster Technology Park.
This specialized building offers 1,600 square meters of space for up to five small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the battery industry, which will work closely with institutions such as the MEET University Battery Research Center, the Helmholtz Institute Münster, the Fraunhofer FFB Research Production Facility for Battery Cells, and the Iwaru of Münster University of Applied Sciences. BATTL3 will be equipped to the latest standards for collaborative cutting-edge research, featuring chemical laboratories, hazardous materials storage, modern ventilation systems, office space, and areas for the installation of a drying room. Companies, including international partners, can apply for space at TFM.
TFM Managing Director Volker Ruff, emphasizes:
With this new building, TFM underscores its leading role and driving force in the strategic development of an innovative research infrastructure and the BatteryCityMünster brand,
“Spaces for innovation follow a clear strategic direction to strengthen the local battery systems cluster.”
The term “battery systems cluster” typically refers to the geographical concentration of research institutions, companies, and other stakeholders in Münster involved in the research, development, and application of energy storage technologies. This cluster also operates under the name “BatteryCityMünster” and promotes collaboration and knowledge exchange to drive innovation and increase competitiveness in the energy sector, particularly with regard to the energy transition and the shift to renewable energies. Ruff: “Together with the city, research partners and companies, we want to
contribute to the energy transition, sustainability and self-sufficiency in Europe.”
In addition to its strong scientific foundation, characterized by universities and research institutions,
Dr. Marco Trienes, Managing Director of Wirtschaftsförderung Münster GmbH (Münster Economic Development Corporation), and predicts:
BATTL3 is creating the urgently needed infrastructure for the transfer of knowledge and technologies to the economy
“We expect new business establishments, the transformation of existing companies, and significant impetus for the regional labor market.”
Five months after the groundbreaking ceremony for FFB’s battery research factory in the Hansa Business Park, North Rhine-Westphalia’s Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection, Mona Neubaur, visited again to underscore Münster’s and North Rhine-Westphalia’s strengths as drivers of the energy transition: “The war in Iran once again vividly demonstrates the risks associated with dependence on fossil fuels.
With the construction of its new infrastructure building for battery technology, BattL3, Münster has embarked on the path to greater independence. We need modern battery cells for climate-neutral mobility and energy generation. If these are produced here in Münster in the future, they will make us technologically more independent, create and secure jobs, and bring added value back to Europe. A bold step and a genuine investment in all of our futures.”
Münster’s Mayor, Tilman Fuchs, added:
With BATTL3, we are strategically strengthening Münster as an internationally recognized location for battery research and energy storage technologies.
”For Münster and the region, this means not only additional added value and high-quality jobs, but also a clear profile as an innovative future location for the energy transition and sustainability. BatteryCityMünster is thus gaining further recognition.” “Further international appeal.”
BATTL3 will be built on a wedge-shaped plot of land between the Münster Technology Park on Mendelstrasse and Heisenbergstrasse. The implementation of this flagship project, scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2027, is on a secure financial footing. The aforementioned funding from the state and the EU through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF/JTF program NRW) supplements the technology funding of €7.25 million. The City of Münster is contributing €4 million to the financing.
