80% charge in 6 mins: Toshiba new EV battery boasts over 20,000-cycle lifespan
Toshiba to showcase its fast-charging SCiB lithium-ion battery at Asia Sustainable Energy Week 2025 in Bangkok.
Toshiba Corporation will put its fast-charging SCiB™ lithium-ion battery at the centre stage during Asia Sustainable Energy Week 2025 (ASEW 2025), which runs 2–4 July at Bangkok’s Queen Sirikit National Convention Center.
The Japanese electronics group says the Asia’s largest clean-energy showcase exhibition offers an ideal launchpad for the battery’s next growth phase across Southeast Asian transport, logistics, maritime, and stationary energy storage markets.

Fast chemistry and a Bangkok swap-service trial
At the heart of Toshiba’s pitch is a lithium-titanium-oxide (LTO) anode chemistry, the company claims, that combines “outstanding safety” with an 80 percent recharge in six minutes and a rated lifetime of more than 20,000 charge-discharge cycles. Those numbers, it argues, translate into shorter downtimes and lower total cost of ownership for fleet operators whose vehicles make frequent stops.
Toshiba and a local partner are running a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) pilot for motorcycle-taxi drivers to test that proposition on Bangkok’s streets. Riders rent the battery, swap depleted packs for charged ones, and avoid the capital outlay of buying an entire powertrain.
The company says the SCiB (Super Charge ion Batteries) cell’s thermal stability also addresses fire-safety worries in the region’s year-round heat, a key hurdle for two-wheel EV adoption.
Beyond motorbikes, the LTO pack is finding its way into electric delivery vans, port equipment, and coastal vessels that must charge quickly during loading windows.
Toshiba emphasises the battery’s tolerance for repeated rapid-charge cycles and its ability to deliver high power in tight spaces, attributes it believes will “support cleaner, more efficient operations” as Asia’s goods movement electrifies.
From city buses to hydrogen-cooled aircraft
A glimpse of the platform’s next iteration appeared in 2024, when Toshiba and two partners rolled out a prototype electric city bus powered by “next-generation” SCiB modules.
Engineers reported that the pack could reach 80 percent state of charge in ten minutes, promising shorter layovers, faster acceleration, and, thanks to fewer required packs, lower capital and operating expenses for transit agencies. The company also highlighted the cell’s reduced risk of fire or explosion compared with conventional graphite-anode batteries.
Toshiba’s battery ambitions extend into the air. Its Energy Systems division has begun sharing superconducting know-how with Airbus UpNext to explore liquid-hydrogen-cooled electrical propulsion for future zero-emission aircraft.
While that research tackles a longer-term goal, commercial hydrogen flight by 2050, the firms argue that superconducting powertrains could slash weight and efficiency losses, complementing advances in electrochemical storage such as SCiB.
Courting partners at Asia’s clean-energy crossroads
ASEW 2025 is expected to draw thousands of policymakers, financiers, and technology suppliers to Bangkok, underscoring Southeast Asia’s race to decarbonise road traffic, shipping lanes, and power grids.
Toshiba will occupy Booth G51, where delegates can examine live battery samples, interactive charge-rate displays, and technical panels detailing the LTO cell’s safety record and life-cycle economics.

By pairing its existing land- and sea-based deployments with the Bangkok BaaS trial and early-stage aerospace work, Toshiba hopes to present SCiB as a versatile building block for Asia’s energy transition.
Whether that breadth convinces fleet owners and infrastructure planners will hinge on cost, supply chain capacity, and real-world performance, metrics that the company and prospective customers will be watching closely as the six-minute-charge battery steps into the regional spotlight.
